Hi, thanks for the update. What happened to Nigel who used to run the Balham Bowls Club quiz? The Grove prize has always been the pot. On a memorable night about 18 months ago we won just under £300!

Pub Quizzes in Balham

I like a good pub quiz and in Balham, there are currently plenty to choose from. Here are the ones I've tried. Entry to all of these is £2 per person and they all have a limit of six people to a team (although at most of them, teams over that number are allowed but you lose a point for each extra person). They all start at 8:00pm.The RegentSunday nightSlightly unusual as this is the only quiz on my list which isn't run by Question One…See More

Who knows. It all seems very experimental. You can post your own text from SW12.org to Twitter using the status text box on your profile page.

It doesn't come up with the text of your message, but with "Checking out "We are Social" on SW12.org: http://ning.it/9p2COu"; - is that right?

Balham Restaurant Bingo

This seems like a good idea.A group of restaurant owners in Balham have decided that dining out at decent restaurants shouldn’t be left up to chance and have joined together to promote dining out locally. They’ve come up with Balham Bingo, a loyalty/discount card that – once you eat at all six restaurants – gives you an even bigger discount. The restaurants, you, your wallet – everyone’s a winner – which sadly doesn’t…See More

it will reopen in a couple of weeks, i just spoke to the owners about the state that its been left in and they advised me new tenants should be in there soon. the tup company (massive pubs) are in administration, the owners (punch taverns) are not.

Pub Quizzes

Which pub quizzes do you like in Balham?Until last weekend we went to the Sunday night quiz in the Balham Tup. But that's now finished (as the pub has closed down). We're also occasional visitors to the Tuesday night quiz at the Balham Bowls club. But that gets far too crowded and it's been months since we won.So I'm looking around for a replacement. Does anyone else know of a good pub quiz around SW12?See More

The Balham Tup

I used to go into the Balham Tup over ten years, back when it was owned by Paddy Gallagher. Until very recently I hadn't been there for years. And then, a few months ago I met a friend who I hadn't been in touch with for years and he invited me to go along to the Tup on Sunday night for their pub quiz. My wife and I went along that week, enjoyed it and for the last two or three months we've been regulars there on a Sunday night. We've even won the quiz three or four times.Last Sunday we were…See More

X Crossing

Posted on November 2, 2009 at 12:55pm 4 Comments

If all you had to go by was today's press coverage (which seems to be largely reprinted from the official press release) then you might well find it easy to believe that Oxford Circus was the first place in London to get a diagonal crossing. You might even be convinced by the line that this new crossing was inspired by… Continue

The Exhibit

Last night we went to the Exhibit for dinner. It was the launch night for their new "393" menu and I had been invited along as someone who is apparently "a committed member of the Balham Social scene". In the interests of full disclosure I should make it clear that we didn't pay full price for our meals.

We've been eating in the Exhibit off and on since it opened. I remember being slightly dubious when the outhouse in… Continue

Barbers

Posted on September 19, 2009 at 3:08pm 3 Comments

I first moved to Balham in 1991. At that time there were, I think, two barbers in Balham. For no good reason I started going to Ron's (or was it Don's?) on Chestnut Grove.

Ron (or Don) was getting on a bit and it was just him cutting hair in the shop. I only ever went on a Saturday and it seemed that he was pretty busy, but you never needed to wait too long to get into the chair.

Some time later, Don's (or Ron's) place shut down. I think it was all part of the development… Continue

Funnily enough, necessity has driven us the other way. Because Pizza Express is so kid friendly we end up there almost weekly and probably don’t get to Cuillo more than once or twice a year; which is a damn shame. Not that Cuillo isn’t good with kids (in fact when we’ve taken the kids there for lunch in the past the staff have been wonderful), but they only have one high-chair, so it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get in. Also, my concern is that a family with noisy 2 & 4 year olds will piss off the other diners in Cuillo; whereas in Pizza Express there are so many kids there from lunchtime until a certain point in the evening that I have no such concerns.

In my view, Cuillo wins hands-down on the food-front though & the same guys have been working there for the 8 years we’ve been in Balham. A small point for some, but a very good sign in my book.

My former fave pizza joint in Balham was Salamander (RIP, sniff!) which we went to religiously once or twice a week after work (and before the kids arrived in our lives). I absolutely loved that place & was appalled that they had to shut down. We live up past the Mosque so those places are actually really close to us which makes them even better.

The kids are growing up though & as soon as we don’t need a high chair for Child #2, we’ll start going to Cuillo a lot more.

Thanks for your comment - I'd not noticed Google Ads identifying my Dr Who link, but if you've grown up enduring jokes/comments about Dr Who you tend to miss mentions of it!
